Doctoral Consortium

Quick Facts

Message from the Doctoral Consortium Chairs

The IUI 2012 Doctoral Consortium provides an opportunity for Doctoral students to present and receive feedback about their research work in an interdisciplinary workshop, under the guidance of a panel of distinguished researchers. We invite students who feel they would benefit from this kind of feedback on their dissertation to apply for this unique opportunity to share their work with students in a similar situation as well as senior researchers in the field. The strongest candidates will be those who have a clear topic and research approach, and have made some progress, but who are not so far along with their thesis that they can no longer make changes. In addition to stating how you will gain from participation, both you and your advisor should be clear on what you can contribute to the Doctoral Consortium.

What is the Doctoral Consortium?

The Consortium has the following objectives:

The Consortium will be held on the 14th of February 2012. The consortium will be organized as a single track, with about 8 to 12 presentations by the students whose applications have been selected by the Doctoral Consortium committee. Selected applicants will receive complimentary conference registration, and a limited, partial reimbursement of travel, accommodation and food expenses.

Preparing and Submitting your Doctoral Consortium Proposal

Current PhD graduate students who would benefit from detailed workshop discussions of their doctoral research should submit a single PDF file that includes the following elements:

Once the PDF file has been assembled – and tested, the entire submission file should be uploaded following the directions at the IUI2012 submission site, no later than 17:00 PDT on 15 November 2011.

It is essential to ensure that the submission is complete and in accordance with the format and content guidelines in the IUI Doctoral Consortium submission template. Because the Doctoral Consortium Committee expects to receive a large number of applications, submissions that do not meet these requirements will be rejected without review.

Doctoral Consortium Review Process

The Doctoral Consortium committee will review and make acceptance/rejection decisions about all proposals. The decision for acceptance will balance many factors, including the quality of the PhD proposal, its relevance to the IUI field and where you are within your doctoral education program. It also includes external factors, including balancing the backgrounds and topics of selected proposals. The institution will also be taken into account: it is highly unlikely that more than two students from the same institution will be selected and almost certainly that we will not accept more than one student with the same advisor.

Former attendees of doctoral consortia at major SIGCHI conferences (e.g. CHI) should not apply. Candidates who have a clearly developed idea, who are formally considered by their institution to be working on their dissertation, and who still have time to be influenced by participation in the Consortium will receive the strongest consideration. Confidentiality of submissions is maintained during the review process. All rejected submissions will be kept confidential in perpetuity. All submitted materials for accepted submissions will be kept confidential until the start of the conference.

Upon Acceptance of your Doctoral Consortium Proposal

Authors will be notified of acceptance or rejection on 15th of December 2011, or shortly after.

Authors of accepted submissions will receive instructions on how to submit their publication-ready copy (i.e. the final version of the extended abstract). The deadline to submit this camera-ready version of the submission that incorporates the reviewers' comments is the 5th of February 2012, 17:00 PDT.

Authors of accepted submissions will also receive information about attending the Doctoral Consortium, preparing the oral presentation and poster, registering for the conference at our cost, and making travel arrangements and receiving reimbursement of expenses. These benefits are contingent on attending the Doctoral Consortium. Please note that submissions will not be published without the standard signed form that releases publishing copyright to the ACM. Obtaining permissions to use video, audio, or pictures of identifiable people or proprietary content is responsibility of the author, not the ACM or the IUI conference.

At the Conference

All participants are expected to attend the Consortium, including a group dinner on the evening of February 14th. Each student will present his/her work to the group with substantial time allowed for discussion and questions by participating researchers and other students. Note that being accepted to the Consortium requires your commitment to give/receive thoughtful and constructive feedback from experts in the field.

After the Conference

Accepted Doctoral Consortium abstracts will be available in the ACM Digital Library, where they will remain accessible to thousands of researchers and practitioners worldwide.
